Air Defence Systems
Air defense systems — Surface-to-Air Missile (SAM) systems plus close-in gun and directed-energy systems — are now the scarcest and most expensive segment of the defense market because of the explosive threat mix of cruise missiles, ballistic missiles, drones and hypersonic glide vehicles. A modern SAM system consists of four linked layers: (1) detection and surveillance radar that scans a wide area for air contacts; (2) track / fire-control radar or optical tracker that follows a specific target down to the millimeter; (3) command-and-control station where identification (IFF), prioritization and engagement assignment take place; and (4) launcher with interceptor missile, followed by the missile itself which has its own seeker and ECCM. Intercept physics vary by category. Hit-to-kill (KKV) is applied to exo-atmospheric ABM interceptors (SM-3, GMD, PAC-3 MSE) where no warhead is needed because an impact at ~10 km/s alone destroys any reentry vehicle through kinetic energy. Proximity-fragmentation is the standard method for anti-aircraft and cruise-missile engagements (Patriot GEM-T, Aster, S-400 48N6): a radar or laser fuze detonates the warhead within a few meters of the target and a directed fragmentation cone shreds the air signature. Dual-pulse motors (THAAD, Aster 30 NT) give the missile a second kick in the terminal phase for agility in thin high-altitude air. Active radar homing (AIM-120 as the basis for NASAMS, Aster, S-400 48N6) enables fire-and-forget engagement; semi-active homing (older PAC-2, Aspide) requires the ground radar to keep "illuminating" the target. The doctrinal pyramid is layered: point defence (Iron Dome, NASAMS, IRIS-T SLS, Pantsir-S1) at tactical range (<25 km, ceiling <10 km); area defence (PAC-2/3, IRIS-T SLM, NASAMS-ER, S-400 48N6) at operational range (25–150 km); theater defence (THAAD, Aster 30 NT, S-400 40N6) at strategic range (150–400 km); and exo-atmospheric BMD (SM-3, GMD) against ICBM RVs and hypersonic glide vehicles. No state actually has a dense multi-layered "iron dome" over all its infrastructure — Israel has the most famous example (Iron Dome + David's Sling + Arrow + Patriot), but even there mass attacks leak through, as the Iranian attack of April 2024 partly demonstrated (although the intercept ratio was high).
