Operating principle
THAAD (Terminal High Altitude Area Defense) is Lockheed Martin's exo-/endo-atmospheric ABM system that fills the altitude niche between Patriot (below ~30 km) and SM-3 (above 100 km). A battery has six truck-mounted launchers, each with eight THAAD interceptors, an AN/TPY-2 X-band radar (up to 1,000 km range in forward mode), a Tactical Fire Control & Communications (TFCC) post, and logistic vehicles. The TPY-2 radar is unusual: in "Forward-Based Mode" it detects ballistic missiles right after their boost phase, far from one's own territory; in "Terminal Mode" it is integrated with the THAAD battery for local intercepts.
