Operating principle

NASAMS (National Advanced Surface-to-Air Missile System) is Kongsberg and Raytheon's "low-cost area defense" answer: instead of developing a dedicated SAM, NASAMS integrates the existing AIM-120 AMRAAM (an air-to-air missile from aircraft) and optionally the AIM-9X Sidewinder as ground-launched interceptors. A battery has four MPQ-64 Sentinel S-band 3D radars (Lockheed Martin), a Fire Distribution Center (FDC) with advanced C2 software, and six box launchers each with six AMRAAM canisters. The radars are distributed at distance from the launchers (line-of-sight but linked via datalink), so a battery can be spread over a wide area (~25 × 25 km) — an opponent has to destroy more than one target per battery to take it out.
