Operating principle

The S-400 (NATO: SA-21 Growler) is Almaz-Antey's flagship area-defense SAM, evolved from the S-300PMU-2. A regiment has up to eight batteries, each with a Big Bird surveillance radar (96L6E in S-band, 600 km range), one Grave Stone engagement radar (92N6E in X-band), one 55K6 command post, and six 5P85 TEL launchers each with four missile canisters. Four missile types can be loaded interchangeably for layered defense: 9M96E (40 km, hit-to-kill, anti-ballistic), 9M96E2 (120 km), 48N6E2/E3 (250 km, classic anti-aircraft), and 40N6 (range 400 km against non-maneuvering targets — claimed, not independently verified). Guidance: TVM (track-via-missile) with active terminal homing in the latest missile variants.
