Operating principle

HQ-9 ("Red Banner-9") is the Chinese pseudo-S-300/Patriot, developed by CASIC. A regiment has an HT-233 phased-array engagement radar (S-band), a command post, and TEL launchers each with four 7 m missiles. The missile uses INS + command update + active radar homing in the terminal phase, with a 200 km range against aircraft and a 27 km ceiling. HQ-9B adds improved ECCM and ABM capability; the first export sale went to Pakistan (2017–2018), followed by interest from Egypt, Algeria and Serbia. HQ-22 is a lighter, more mobile variant exported to Serbia (FK-3 export designation, 2020 — the first Chinese SAM in a European country). No ITAR/MTCR restrictions from a Chinese perspective.
