Operating principle
The Mi-17 (export version of the Mi-8MT) is the global standard outside the West — rugged, simple, 4,000 kg lift, 24 troops, excellent in extreme climates (Afghanistan, Antarctica, South America). Two TV3-117 engines or the more modern VK-2500. ~12,000 built across all variants. Sanctions against Russia since 2022 make new Mi-17 exports particularly difficult; spare parts and MRO are a major problem for existing operators.
