Operating principle
The V-22 Osprey is a tilt-rotor: two proprotors at the wingtips swivel between vertical (helicopter mode for take-off/landing) and horizontal (airplane mode for cruise). Cruise 565 km/h, range 1,600 km, 24 troops. Three variants: MV-22B (USMC, amphibious lift), CV-22B (USAF special ops with ALL/AAR refueling capability), CMV-22B (US Navy carrier onboard delivery). Japan is the only export customer (17 aircraft, first deliveries 2020). Safety issues 2023–2024: several fatal crashes, US DoD temporarily grounded the entire fleet in December 2023, flight restrictions until 2024. Unit price: ~USD 70+ million.
