Operating principle
The CH-53K is the heaviest Western helicopter ever built — three GE T408-GE-400 engines (~7,500 hp each), max external sling payload 16,300 kg, more than 1.5× a Chinook. It is intended for amphibious heavy lift (an M777 howitzer with full crew, an armored JLTV) and operational deployment from USS America-class LHAs. First FMS export: Israel (12 aircraft, 2021 deal, first deliveries 2025). Unit price: ~USD 100+ million (due to complexity and low production volume).
