Operating principle

The Mi-28NM is the Russian conventional attack helicopter (Apache analogue): tandem cockpit, mast-mounted radar, 30 mm 2A42 cannon, 9M120 Ataka and 9M127 Vikhr anti-tank missiles. Ka-52 is unique due to its coaxial rotor and side-by-side cockpit with ejection seats — intended for naval deployment from Mistral helicopter carriers (export cancelled in 2014). Both have been intensively used in Ukraine; the Ka-52 had spectacular successes with Vikhr missiles against Ukrainian columns on the southern front in March 2022 (later shown to be Russian optical-propaganda success since ATGM guidance against tanks at >5 km range was used through "low-vulnerability" tactics). But Russian market share dropped sharply after Ukraine losses: more than 50 Ka-52 lost per Oryx OSINT count (June 2024 figures). The Mi-28NM has better platform performance but less export success (Algeria, Iraq, Iran, Belarus).
