Operating principle

HIMARS (High Mobility Artillery Rocket System) is a 5-ton 6×6 truck (FMTV derivative) with a single launcher pod of 6 GMLRS rockets or one ATACMS/PrSM. That makes it considerably lighter and air-transportable (C-130) compared to the tracked M270A2 MLRS, which carries two pods (a total of 12 rockets or 2 ATACMS) on a Bradley-derivative chassis. Fire control: GPS-guided GMLRS (M30A1/M31A1) with 70 km range and CEP <2 m; ER-GMLRS in build-up with 150 km range. Combat revolution in Ukraine 2022– : HIMARS shifted the tactical balance because it became possible to strike Russian ammo depots, command posts and air defenses with precision from a position outside Russian artillery range. Effectiveness: 9.5/10. Unit price: HIMARS ~USD 4–5 million; a GMLRS round ~USD 168,000. Users: US, Romania, Poland (218 vehicles, ~USD 10 billion 2023), Australia, Estonia (6), Latvia (6), Lithuania (8), the Netherlands, Japan (6), ROK, Ukraine (>40 delivered), Taiwan, Morocco.
