Operating principle

The M777 is a lightweight towed 155 mm/39-cal howitzer, with titanium and aluminum alloy instead of steel in its carriage — making it weigh only 4.2 tons (compared to the traditional M198 at ~7 tons). That makes it sling-loadable under a CH-47 Chinook or CH-53. Range with M795 HE: 24 km; with Excalibur GPS round: 40 km; with M982 Excalibur and V-LAP: 70 km. Fire control via DFCS (Digital Fire Control System) or EPIAFS — soldiers type coordinates into a tablet and the system computes elevation/azimuth. Combat record: Iraq, Afghanistan, Ukraine (in mass since 2022, with more than 150 delivered). It became legendary against Russian breakthrough attempts because it is air-droppable plus in action within seconds. Users: US, UK, Australia, Canada, India, Ukraine.
