Operating principle

Soryu class (Mitsubishi Heavy + Kawasaki) was the first SSK with lithium-ion batteries instead of conventional lead-acid — providing significantly more underwater endurance. Taigei class (since 2022) is the direct successor with upgraded sensors. Japan-only; the Australian tender was lost in 2016 to France's Naval Group (later AUKUS), and the Dutch tender of the early 2020s was also lost.
