Operating principle

GPS III is the third-generation GPS constellation (10 satellites planned); delivers M-code (military encrypted, jam-resistant), 3× accuracy improvement, and L1C civilian compatibility with Galileo. SBIRS (Space-Based Infrared System) are GEO + HEO IR satellites that detect missile launches worldwide within seconds via the plume IR signature. Next-Gen OPIR is the direct successor (first launch 2025) with greater sensitivity against hypersonic threats and a mixed fleet in GEO + Polar HEO + LEO. Not exportable; data is shared with NATO partners through FMS data-sharing.
