Operating principle

BrahMos (Brahmaputra + Moskva) is a supersonic cruise missile, first-generation derived from the Russian P-800 Oniks/Yakhont and modernized with Indian electronics. Range originally 290 km (to stay within MTCR Cat. I when India was not yet a member), extended after India's MTCR accession in 2016 to 450 km and 800 km in the latest versions. Speed Mach 2.8–3.0 in sea-skimming flight (10–15 m above water), Mach 3 at altitude. Two-stage propulsion: a solid-fuel booster brings the missile to supersonic speed, after which a liquid-fuel ramjet ignites. Deployed from truck TEL, ship VLS or aircraft (Su-30MKI). Guidance INS + GLONASS/GPS + active radar terminal seeker. First export sale 2022: the Philippines (~USD 375 million for three coastal-defense batteries — first deliveries 2024). Indonesia and Vietnam are in negotiation.
