Operating principle

The 9M729 (NATO: SSC-8 "Screwdriver") is a ground-launched cruise missile derivative of the 3M14 Kalibr with claimed range >500 km (possibly 2,500 km). Deployed from an Iskander-K TEL with four missiles in canisters. Guidance: TERCOM + GLONASS (Russia's GPS equivalent). The 9M729 was the central "INF-cheating" missile: the US recorded flight tests since 2014 that crossed the 500 km threshold, forming the legal basis for Trump's INF withdrawal in 2019. Since then 9M729 has been freely deployed in western Russia and used in Ukraine. Not exportable.
