Operating principle
The T129 ATAK is based on the AgustaWestland A129 Mangusta with Turkish modifications (avionics, weapons, engine option). LHTEC T800 engines (a Honeywell-Rolls-Royce joint venture), which ironically are ITAR components that blocked the Pakistan deal (30 aircraft) in 2019 — the only case where a Turkish export deal failed because of ITAR component dependency. T929 ATAK-2 is the heavier successor (2024 prototype) with a Ukrainian TV3-117 or Turkish engine to guarantee ITAR independence.
