Operating principle

The Gripen E (in Brazil: F-39E) is the "lean fighter": smaller airframe, lower cost per flight hour (~USD 5,000–8,000 vs Rafale ~USD 16,000), and a unique "agile development" software model (new weapon integration in weeks instead of years). Single F414-GE-39E turbofan, Mach 2, range 4,000 km with external tanks. Sensors: Selex Raven ES-05 AESA radar (on a unique movable swashplate mount giving 100° coverage), Skyward-G IRST, SaabHELIX EW. Distinguishing feature: can operate from cut-off road sections ("Bas 90" doctrine), unlike most 4.5-gen jets that require dedicated runways. Weapons: Meteor, IRIS-T, AIM-120, AGM-65 Maverick, GBU-12, RBS-15. Unit price: ~USD 60–85 million. Users: Brazil (36 in build-up), Czechia (lease), Hungary (lease), Thailand (upgraded), South Africa (upgraded), Colombia (final selection 2023), Philippines (in evaluation).
