Operating principle
The Harpoon has been the Western standard AShM since 1977 — sea-skimming subsonic (Mach 0.85), J402-CA-400 turbojet, range 124 km (Block II) up to 250 km (Block II+ ER), payload 220 kg WDU-18/B blast-fragmentation. Guidance: INS + GPS in cruise (Block II added GPS/INS — Block I was INS only), active J-band radar seeker in the terminal phase. Launched from VLS, canister launchers on coastal batteries, aircraft (P-3, P-8, F/A-18, F-15, B-52), or submarines. ~30 users worldwide. Unit price: ~USD 1.5 million.
