Operating principle
UMPK ("Unifitsirovannyy Modul' Planirovaniya i Korrektsii" — "Unified Planning and Correction Module") is Russia's answer to Western JDAM-ER: a GPS + INS + wing-conversion kit on standard FAB-500/FAB-1500/FAB-3000 dumb iron bombs. Range ~70 km. RUSI in May 2024 noted that UMPK conversion of dumb FAB bombs shifted the tactical balance in Ukraine in Russia's favor in the first half of 2024 — the Russian air force can drop UMPK-FAB on Ukrainian lines from its own airspace under the S-400 umbrella, and Ukraine lacks (until Patriot coverage) the capacity to strike the Su-34/Su-35 launchers before they release.
